Beautiful Hunting Estate in Val Trebbia

VISIT OF THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGES AND CASTLES

Visit to the town considered one of Italy’s finest towns: Castell’Arquato.

It is located in the Val D’Arda and its center is on a hill-top. Its main square, the Piazza Monumentale, sits on the highest part of the hill and it is surrounded by the Visconti fortress (14th century), the Santa Maria Convent, dating back from the VIII century, and the Podestà Palace, which was the siege of the town’s political power. Tour followed with a lunch in the restaurant “Il Maps”.

After lunch we continue towards Vigoleno Castle and fortified village. The village has an elliptical shape and is surrounded by high crenellated walls from which one can admire a wonderful view of the Stirone valley. The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is on the main square, while the Church of San Giorgio, built in the XII century in Romanic style, is also worth a visit.

FOOD EXPERIENCE: PARMIGIANO REGGIANO CHEESE & PARMA HAM FACTORY VISITS

Follow the steps for a great Parmigiano Reggiano, handmade cheese, following the old tradition.

The milk processed is a special kind of milk, coming from cows fed in a certain way and this does facilitate the cheese masters’ task, but it does not make it easy. Cheese masters really make cheese using their hands and heads. Demonstration are possible early in the morning (approx. 8.30 am) when Parmesan is prepared.

Together with a visit to a local Cheese Plant we can combine a Parma ham prosciutto tasting at a local producer; in fact nowadays the tradition of Parma Ham is as strong as ever. Only hams produced and cured in the hills around Parma may become “Parma Hams”. It is actually all about a “big family” of producers (189 firms) carefully watching over the production phases in accordance with the tradition.

GRAZZANO VISCONTI WALKING TOUR

The history of Grazzano was for many centuries linked to that of the Anguissola family, but it was Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, a brilliant and cultured Milanese aristocrat, who decided, at the beginning of the 20th century, to create a picturesque village here in mediaeval style. It is a rare example of revivalist architecture (so fashionable in Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries), linked to a passion for the theatrical and costumes and a love of traditions, which today allows visitors to feel like they have been catapulted back in time 700 years.
